Last month,James Connolly,a junior at the University of Massachusetts, stood in front of a local police station wearing a toga(长袍)as punishment.
His crime? He was charged with underage drinking, illegal possession of alcohol and too much noise while holding a party.
This shaming punishment has increased in the US in recent years, mostly imposed(强加)by local judges for less-serious crimes, such as drunk driving and theft.
They believe shame is the best petty crime deterrent(威慑).For example,in Tennessee,Judge James McKenzie has made shoplifters stand outside Wal-Mart with signs that read,“I am a thief put here by order of Judge McKenzie.”
“Alternative punishments like community service and fines don't convey moral condenation of the criminal,”said Dan Kahan,a University of Chicago Law School professor,in an article published on the university's website.“They aren't shameful enough.”
Supporters of shaming punishment argue that public shaming is a good way of expressing community values. Some judges say shamed offenders seldom repeat their crimes.
Others aren't so sure.“There is little evidence to suggest that shaming punishments are successful in preventing people from committing specific crimes. And a shamed criminal may face a hard battle to regain trust in society,”said Hosmanek.“So, a shaming punishment may force the offender into more crimes to support himself.”
36.According to the passage, wearing a toga in public is a(n)________.
A.honour B.shame C.duty D.crime
解析 细节理解题。根据第三段“This shaming punishment”承前指代wearing a toga这种处罚。

A.Getting a fine for what one has done.
B.Apologizing to the police for one's wrong doing.
C.Holding a sign in public that announces one'sown crime.
D.Being forced to work for the community without being paid.
解析 推理判断题。根据第五段“...they aren't shameful enough”可知Professor Kahan赞同新做法。
答案 C
39.According to Hosmanek, shamed criminals are more likely to commit new crimes because________.

D.they do not want to do any work

If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn,Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its carplane, the Transition,to customers by the end of 2011.
“It's the next ‘wow' vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh.“Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say,Ferraris don't fly.”
The carplane has wings that unfold for flying-a process the company says takes one minute-and fold back up for driving.A runway is still required to take off and land.
The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.
The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports:You drive the car to the airport and then you're good to go.When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don't have to store it at an airport-you park it in the garage at home.
The carplane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet.It has a maximum take off weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers.Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under the bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界的)conditions.
The Transition's price tag: 194,000.But there may be additional charges for options like a radio,a transponder or a GPS.Another option is a fullplane parachute.
“If you get into a very awful situation,it is the necessary safety option,”Gersh said.
So far,the company has more than 70 orders with deposits.“We're working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,”Brown said.

A 33yearold financial analyst in California recently quit his job to devote himself to an unpaid job teaching math on the Internet, and his lessons are reaching almost 100,000 people a month.Salman Khan's voice is heard every day on the Net-by tens of thousands of students around the world who are hungry for help learning math.He has posted 1,200 lessons on YouTube that appear on an electronic blackboard, which range from basic addition to advanced mathematics for science and finance. And they are free.
Khan lives in Silicon Valley, with his wife,a doctor, and their new baby.He got the idea for his“Khan Academy” four years ago, when he taught a young cousin how to convert kilograms to grams. With Khan's help, the cousin got good at math, and Khan began a new career.
Now,Khan records his lessons himself, but he never goes on camera.“It feels like my voice in their head. You're looking at it and it feels like someone's over your shoulder talking in your ear,as opposed to someone at the blackboard, which is distant from you,”he said.
When Springfield High School in Palo Alto,California invited Khan to speak in person-he immediately connected to the students there.
The idea of short lessons that can be played over and over again attracted high school senior Bridget Meaney. She said she had trouble with math in the seventh grade.“I think the teachers are good, but they can't teach at a speed that's perfect for everyone,”she said.“I like the idea of learning something in class but then going back and pressing pause or rewind and actually getting a deeper understanding of it.”
Originally,Khan kept his lessons short because of YouTube restrictions. Now,he thinks short_is_better.“Education researchers now tell me that 10 minutes is how long someone can have a high level of concentration. And anything beyond that and your brain switches off,”he said.
For Khan, teaching math, science, and finance is just the beginning. He says he's ready to expand his YouTube site to include other subjects as well.

Regifting only with care
At this busiest giftgivingtime of the year, many of us wonder what to do with the unwanted presents we get.Is it all right to regift—to give the unwanted present to someone else?
A gift is a symbol of what a relationship means to us.The best gifts meet the needs or satisfy the desires of the receiver.A gift should be about pleasing the other person, not showing off the taste, wealth of power of the giver. We should give with the other person, not ourselves in mind.
Still,a friend, colleague or family member who knows us well might now and then buy us something that is the last thing we'd buy for ourselves.People in longterm relationships can be surprised at the choices in clothes, music or gadgets(小玩意) made by their friends of relatives.
Regifting creates a dilemma(窘境) because we don't want to hurt the feelings of the giftgiver, but we also feel it's wasteful not to use something that might benefit someone else.
Regifting avoids waste and repays a debt gratitude we owe to someone else, but it presents the risk that the original giver will be hurt if she or he discovers what we did.
Following are a few guidelines for regifting:
—Don't use the gift.
—Regift soon,so you don't risk regifting to the original giver.
—Make sure that the new receiver doesn't know the original giver or is unlikely to run into him or her.
If there's a possibility that the original giver could learn about the regift or if he or she expects to see you wearing the gift, consider asking for permission.Let him or her know how much you appreciate the thought behind the gift.A person who understands that a gift is intended to be pleasing will understand. As long as the person who gave the unwelcome gift doesn't mind or won't find out,you can regift with a clear conscience.Besides, you can be sure that at least one of the gifts you've received was given originally to someone else.
