A
If you travel to a new exhibit at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, you will have chances to see some meateating plants.Take bladderworts,a kind of such plant, for example. They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. But these are the fastestknown killers of the plant kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door!
Once the trap door closes on the victim, the enzymes(酶)similar to those in the human stomach slowly digest the insect. When dinner is over, the plant opens the trap door and is ready to trap again.
Meateating plants grow mostly in wet areas with soil that doesn't offer much food value. In such conditions, these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs over thousands of years.North America has more such plants than any other continent.
Generally speaking, the traps may have attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants, which get their name because they look like beautiful pitchers (a container like a bottle) full of nectar(花蜜).
The Asian pitcher plant, for example, has bright colors and an attractive halfclosed lid.Curious insects are tempted to come close and take a sip,and then slide down the slippery(光滑的)slope to their deaths.
Hairlike growths along the pitcher walls ensure that nothing can escape, and the digestive enzymes can get to work.A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of days.
Some of these pitchers are large enough to hold two gallons.Meateating plants only eat people in science fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn't a good place to get a drink.

答案 B
37.If the trap door of a meateating plant is closed, the plant________.
A.is fooling insects into taking a sip
B.is producing nectar
C.is tempting insects to come close
D.is enjoying a dinner
38.Meateating plants can grow in wet and poor soil because they________.
A.can get nutrition from animals
B.don't need much food value
C.can make the most of such conditions
D.have developed digestive enzymes
答案 A
39.Which of the following is the picture of the Asian pitcher plant?

Researchers from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill found that coral coverage in the IndoPacifican area stretching from Indonesia's Sumatra island to French Polynesia—dropped 20 percent in the past two decades.
About 600 square miles of reefs have disappeared since the 1960s,the study found, and the losses were just as bad in Australia's wellprotected Great Barrier Reef as they were in poorly managed marine reserves in the Philippines.
“We found the loss of reef building corals was much more widespread and severe than previously thought,”said John Bruno, who conducted the study along with Elizabeth Selig.“Even the best managed reefs in the IndoPacific suffered significant coral loss over the past 20 years.”
The study, which examined 6,000 surveys of more than 2,600 IndoPacific coral reefs done between 1968 and 2004,found the declines began earlier than previously estimated and mirror global trends. The United Nations has found close to a third of the world's corals have disappeared, and 60 percent are expected to be lost by 2030.
The IndoPacific contains 75 percent of the world's coral reefs and provide a home for a wide range of marine plants and animals. They provide shelter for island communities and are key source of income, mostly from the benefits of fishing and tourism.
“ IndoPacific reefs have played an important economic and cultural role in the region for hundreds of years and their continued decline could mean the loss of millions of dollars in fisheries and tourism,”Selig said in a statement.“It's like when everything in the forest is gone except for little twigs(小树).”

A.Many marine plants and animals live in them.
B.They can be used as building materials.
C.Many marine plants and animals feed on them.
D.They provide shelter for island residents.

How much rain has fallen on the earth in the past?Man has not always kept weather records.Because scientists need a way to learn about past rainfall, they study the tree rings.
A tree's trunk(树干)grows bigger each year.Under its bark(树皮),a tree adds a layer of new wood each year it lives. If you look at a tree stump(树桩),you can see the layers which are called annual rings.
On some trees, all of the rings are of the same width. But the ponderosa pine(美国黄松)that grows in the American southwest have rings in different width. The soil in the southwest is dry.The pines depend on rainfall for water. In a year of good rainfall, they form wide rings. In a dry year, they form narrow ones.
Scientists don't have to cut down a pine tree to study its rings. With a special tool, they can remove a narrow piece of wood from the trunk without harming the tree. Then they look at the width of each ring to see how much rain fell in the year it formed.
Some pines are hundreds of years old and have hundreds of rings. These rings form an annual record of past rainfall in the southwest.

Hidden in our subconsciousness(潜意识) is a perfect mental picture. We see ourselves on a long trip that goes across the continent. We are traveling by train.Out of the windows,we think in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways,of children waving at a crossing,of cattle feeding on a distant hillside,of smoke pouring from a power plant,or row upon row of corn and wheat,of flat lands and valleys,of mountains and rolling hills,of city skylines and village halls.
But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour,we will pull into the station.Bands will be playing and flags waving.Once we get there,so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw(拼图玩具) puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles(通道),condemning the minutes for loitering—waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.
“When we reach the station, that will be it!” we cry,“When I'm 38.” “When I buy a new 450SL Mercdes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement,I shall live happily ever after!”
Sooner or later,we must realize there is no station,no one place to arrive at once and for all.The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.
“Relish(appreciate) the moment” is a good motto, actually it isn't the burdens of today that drive man mad.It is the regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow.Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.
So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles.Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less.Life must be lived as we go along. Then the station will come soon enough.

C.Relaxed. D.Impatient.
根据第二段“How restlessly we pace the aisles(通道)...” puzzled“迷惑的”;happy“高兴的”;relaxed“放松的”。

D.We're frequently challenged by the two:regret and fear.
根据倒数第二段中“It is the regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow”可知,对过去的懊悔和对未来的恐惧使得人们无法享受现在,故C项最佳。
答案 C
50.Why does the author write the passage?
A.To teach us a good lesson.
B.To tell us the right attitude to life.
C.To advise us to forget our worries.
D.To stop us wandering along the aisles.

UK residents take over 40m holidays abroad and more than 100m overnight stays in this country each year.Choices made about where to go,how to get there and what to do while there can either benefit or harm the environment.
While on holiday
Many of the things you can do to be greener on holiday will be the same things you can do at home—but there are also some extra things too, like avoiding gifts made from endangered species. Here are some suggestions:
·Making the most of locally produced food and drink,and local activities and attractions will support people in the area you are visiting and reduce the need for further environmental impact from transport;
·Switching off any air conditioning,heating and lights when you're not using your accommodation will help reduce climate change effects;
·Try not to waste water—some countries suffer from water shortages and saving water can help avoid damage to natural habitats.
Endangered species
Some gifts and foods available in some countries can be made from endangered plants or animals, for example, animal skins, ivory, orchids, caviar,or coral.Check before you buy,but if in doubt avoid animal and plant gifts.More details of the types of products to avoid and illegal trade hotspots can be found on the Souvenir Alert webpage.
Making a positive contribution to the place you are visiting
There are ways in which your holiday can help support local people and the environment:
·There are many opportunities to volunteer and help with projects that conserve and improve habitats and nature reserves;
·When you are away,or if you are looking for somewhere to visit in the UK,you can support projects or attractions which protect wildlife, such as nature reserves and conservation projects.
